Summertime Render
サマータイムレンダ
Summer Time Rendering (2022) is a supernatural mystery thriller anime series spanning 25 episodes, based on the manga by Yasuki Tanaka. One of the most masterfully plotted thriller anime of recent years, it combines the propulsive momentum of a time loop survival story with the emotional weight of a homecoming tragedy — a series that earns consistent comparison to Steins;Gate and Higurashi for good reason.

The Story
Shinpei Ajiro returns to Hitogashima, the small island he grew up on, for the funeral of his childhood friend Ushio — officially ruled a drowning accident. Something feels wrong immediately. A bruise on Ushio's neck. A rumor about a Shadow seen near the water that night.
Before Shinpei can investigate, he is killed. And then he wakes up — back on the boat arriving at the island, two days earlier.
The island harbors Shadows: shapeshifting entities that kill residents and assume their form with perfect physical fidelity, infiltrating families and communities from within. They are patient, strategic, and nearly impossible to identify. Shinpei can loop back to a fixed point each time he dies, retaining all memory of what happened — but the Shadows learn too, and the island's conspiracy runs deeper than any single loop can unravel.
What distinguishes Summer Time Rendering from other time loop anime is its escalating structural intelligence. Each cycle doesn't simply reset the board — it changes it. Knowledge accumulates, alliances shift, the nature of the threat reveals itself in layers, and the emotional stakes never reduce to mere survival mechanics. The mystery of the island's history and the Shadows' origin is as compelling as the thriller architecture surrounding it.
Themes
Grief and Determination — Shinpei's loops are driven as much by love as by strategy
Identity and Imitation — The Shadows raise the question of whether a perfect copy constitutes the same person
Community and Hidden History — The island's secrets predate the present crisis by generations
The Cost of Foreknowledge — Knowing what is coming does not make it easier to watch happen
Legacy
Summer Time Rendering arrived as one of the most pleasant surprises in recent supernatural thriller anime — a series that began with a tight mystery hook and expanded into something genuinely epic in scope without ever losing the emotional intimacy of its opening tragedy. For fans of time loop mysteries, supernatural horror, and tightly plotted thriller anime, it is essential modern viewing.
