Pluto (2023) is a sci-fi mystery and neo-noir detective anime spanning 8 episodes, produced by Netflix and Atom Entertainment. Based on Naoki Urasawa's landmark reimagining of Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy, it is a gripping, emotionally devastating murder mystery dressed as science fiction — one of the most stunning anime productions of its year and a worthy successor to Urasawa's earlier masterwork, Monster.

The Story

The world's most advanced robots coexist uneasily with humanity in the aftermath of a catastrophic war. Then they begin dying. Someone — or something — is systematically hunting and destroying the seven most powerful robots on Earth, along with the human experts connected to them.

Gesicht, a Europol robot detective of remarkable capability and deeper emotional complexity than most humans he works alongside, is assigned to investigate. As he traces the killings across continents, the trail leads backward — into the buried history of a devastating war, into secrets that powerful institutions have spent years suppressing, and toward a conspiracy with implications for both human and robot civilization.

Urasawa's genius, as demonstrated in Monster, is his ability to use genre mechanics as vessels for profound humanist inquiry. Pluto asks what it means to feel grief, carry trauma, and pursue justice when you are a being that was never supposed to need any of those things. Its murder mystery structure is meticulous and deeply satisfying — but the emotional core is what makes it essential.

Themes

  • Grief and Memory — Several of the most affecting storylines involve robots grappling with loss they were never designed to process

  • War and Its Aftermath — The conspiracy at the heart of the series is inseparable from the crimes of the war that preceded it

  • Humanity and Artificial Consciousness — Where the line falls between programmed behavior and genuine feeling

  • Justice Across Species — Whether the same moral frameworks can apply to beings of fundamentally different natures

Legacy

Pluto announced itself immediately as one of the definitive anime of 2023 — a sci-fi mystery anime with the production values of prestige television and the narrative ambition of literary fiction. For fans of Monster and serious detective anime, it is unmissable.
